Ogun units up committee to decongest correctional centres

Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran has stated that the state authorities is decided to provide precedence to decongestion of correctional centres.

To attain this, Adeniran stated the federal government had arrange a committee in direction of reaching the mission.

He said this throughout a familiarisation tour to the workplace of the state Controller of Correctional Centres,  Federal Government Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Ibara and Oba Correctional Centres.

He stated {that a} Prerogative of Mercy Council Committee and Community Service Centres can be established along side the Nigeria Correctional Service to decongest the services throughout the state.

He assured the awaiting trials (ATs) inmates of truthful listening to of their instances by the institution of personal attorneys to wade into their case, if the accused individuals are denied of presidency  attorneys.

“Though, most of accused persons may not be able to have deal with the government lawyers, that is more reasons we will establish private lawyers to come into their cases for quick dispensation of justice,” Adeniran stated.

Responding, the State Controller, Ogun State Correctional Centre, Mr. Abolade Victor Benson, expressed appreciation to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, for coming to their rescue at an applicable time.

According to him, the state Correctional Centres want the help of state authorities in regards to the Awaiting Trials (ATs), noting that 80p.c of ATs had been from the state.

Benson emphasised that authorities wanted to help the Correctional Centres by liberating of some inmates which don’t have any case to reply, stressing that a few of theATIs had repented of their sins.

“As you can see them now, most of them are in National Open University (NOUN), some have completed their programmes, some of them have learnt vocational jobs which can make them to be useful in the society”, he stated, including that this group deserves the federal government consideration.

In phrases of logistics, the Controller requested for 15 autos from the state authorities, with a purpose to convey the inmates to the assorted courts within the state for hearings and courts periods.
