Everything you need to live well
Speaking to Miley Cyrus on her Bright Minded Livestream on Friday, the 27-year-old singer revealed she was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
She further said she was grateful to finally find out what has caused her suffering for so many years and wants to gain all the knowledge she can about the condition.
During the candid chat about mental health, Selena said she was diagnosed after a visit to McLean Hospital, a psychiatric facility and neuroscience research center in Massachusetts.
In her words:
Recently, I went to one of the best mental hospitals in… America, McClean Hospital, and I discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, I realized that I was bipolar. When I have more information, it actually helps me, it doesn’t scare me once I know it. When I was younger, I was scared of thunderstorms and my mom bought me all these books on thunderstorms and she was like, “The more you educate yourself on this, the more that you’re not going to be afraid.
Selena said that during her upbringing in Texas she felt like it wasn’t encouraged to talk about emotions.
During the webcast, the duo talked about managing anxiety during the coronavirus pandemic, when people may feel more isolated than usual and have trouble reaching out.
Selena has openly talked about her anxiety and depression in the past but hasn’t before revealed that she suffers from bipolar disorder.
In August 2016, she took a break from her career to deal with anxiety, panic attacks and depression which she said stemmed from lupus.
In 2018 she opened up about her battle with mental illness, telling Harper’s Bazaar, ‘I’ve had a lot of issues with depression and anxiety, and I’ve been very vocal about it, but it’s not something I feel I’ll ever overcome.
Gomez has earned numerous awards throughout her career and was recognized as the Billboard Woman of the Year in 2017. She has a large following on social media, and was at one time the most followed individual on Instagram, before being surpassed by athlete Cristiano Ronaldo.
